This country is headed into the abyss simply because of ideology.

Those "master" teachers whining about their plight aren't "master" teachers to begin with.
Besides, they didn't intend to make a career of teaching anyway.
Instead, they are propaganda mouthpieces for Michelle Rhee and her ilk.
Any way you slice it, the column is classic b.s..

This is as good as anything I have seen from a mainstream publication. Good writeup about what Vidal and Cockburn were really about.
It's not pretty.

Thanks to thirty years of neoliberal politics, the rich are mostly shielded from the effects of a ruinous economy:
The neoliberal hypothesis has been disproved spectacularly. Far from regulating themselves, untrammelled markets were saved from collapse only by government intervention and massive injections of public money. Far from delivering universal prosperity, government cuts have pushed us further into crisis. Yet this very crisis is now being used as an excuse to apply the doctrine more fiercely than before.
So where is the economic elite? Counting the money it has stashed in unregulated tax havens. Thirty years of neoliberalism have allowed the super-rich to detach themselves from the lives of others to such an extent that economic crises scarcely touch them. You could see this as yet another market failure. Even if they are affected, the rich are doubtless prepared to pay an economic price for the political benefits – freedom from democratic restraint – that the doctrine offers.
A programme that promised freedom and choice has instead produced something resembling a totalitarian capitalism, in which no one may dissent from the will of the market and in which the market has become a euphemism for big business. It offers freedom all right, but only to those at the top.
Consistency has never been the neolibs' forte.

A blogger decided on an experiment to gauge how bad the job market REALLY is. He ran a fake Craigslist ad and realized just how intense the competition is for jobs.

I haven't written a hell of a lot about this campaign season because it's like watching paint dry between the two neolibs from the same plugged nickel, but Mitt's tax problem or lack of paying his taxes, may render him useless if it's true he hasn't paid any in ten years.
The GOP is throwing this thing, of course.
I did like this post I saw on DU, which illustrates the bind Romney is in:
There is no good for Mittens in releasing his returns. Either he paid no taxes and is fucked, he cheated on his taxes and he's fucked, he disclosed the existence/balances of his foreign accounts and is fucked, or he was completely honest in which case they reinforce exactly how rich he is and how little he pays in taxes...and he's fucked.
He hasn't disclosed because even the best case scenario for Mitt Romney is "fucked." Minimally, we know the majority of his income came from capital gains in which case he paid taxes at a lower rate than most Americans; already know that but it will look bad for Mitt when people see the actual dollar amounts.
