Glen Ford is always correct when it comes to Obama. Strangely enough, it is Glen Ford who is "conservative" in the best sense of the word; he wants to preserve traditional institutions that serve the public good while Obama is to trying change or to destroy these institutions in the names of "austerity," "consensus," and "neoliberalism":
Obama gets away with shit no Republican ever would for two reasons: the fact he is black and the fact he has a "D" after his name. Both of these neutralize the criticism from the left of the president, which is everybody not in the Tea Party.
Romney/Ryan could NEVER get away with the stuff they talk about doing in the campaign. That's a given, and we have history to prove that.
The state-level Republicans are a different breed altogether, but people are fighting back in the various states like Florida and Wisconsin.
