Obituary: Actor and activist Russell Means, 72, has died. He announced last year he was diagnosed with inoperable throat cancer.
Means was in a number of films, but it was his activism in AIM (American Indian Movement) and his involvement in the 1973 siege at Wounded Knee, South Dakota, for which he is best remembered:
The AIM's armed occupation of Wounded Knee in South Dakota - the site of an infamous massacre of Native Americans by US soldiers in the late 19th Century - lasted for 71 days._____
The protest followed the failure of AIM followers to impeach the elected tribal president, whom they accused of corruption.
Another obit: Humanist and philosopher Paul Kurtz, 86, has died:
A prolific author and organizer, Kurtz also founded the not-for-profit Committee for Skeptical Inquiry and Council for Secular Humanism, as well as the secular humanist magazine Free Inquiry and Skeptical Inquirer magazine, which takes on such topics as alien sightings, paranormal claims and homeopathic remedies. Most recently, he formed the Institute for Science and Human Values.
