We're a bit perplexed as to why anyone other than the staunchest right-winger would consider not voting to re-elect President Barack Obama._____
When he was elected four years ago, the nation stood on the precipice of calamity. In the final year of the debacle that was the Bush-Cheney administration, the U.S. economy was shedding hundreds of thousands of jobs monthly. The fraud perpetuated on Wall Street that allowed subprime mortgages to be traded like a bad casino bet caused millions of homes to sink into foreclosure, destroying families and even lives. The long war in Afghanistan and Iraq not only had cost taxpayers more than $1 trillion, but it also had claimed the lives of more than 4,500 U.S. servicemembers.
America, as former President Jimmy Carter so famously put it decades ago, had sunk into another “malaise.”
Obama not only was a symbol of hope — he was an earnest and qualified statesman who was willing to tackle the massive problems at hand.
Colorado's Post Independent:
In Colorado, as in the other eight swing states, your vote in the presidential election really does count. We recommend voters cast their ballot for President Barack Obama._____
As he has shown in his first term and in his re-election campaign, Obama stands for the things valued by voters in western Colorado: a balanced approach to energy development on public lands, health care reform aimed at making insurance coverage accessible to all, American jobs, and policies supporting women, students and small business.
The president's first term didn't live up to the high expectations set in his 2008 campaign, but much of the blame rests with congressional Republicans who stymied his every move in a self-serving effort to show him as a failure. It's despicable that GOP operatives placed the party's future election prospects ahead of the real-time compromise needed to make progress on issues important to all Americans.
In his first term, President Obama made some, but not enough progress on economic recovery. He didn't push hard enough to address the critical issues of immigration reform and climate change.
