Miscellaneous Newspaper Endorsements

Gary Johnson: Chattanooga Times Free Press:

This election, however, the Republican Party nominee has failed to demonstrate a consistent commitment to conservative principles. As a result of his failure to provide clear methods for reducing the size and scope of the federal government, unwillingness to address structural flaws with entitlement programs, reliance on government to intervene in issues best left to families and individuals, and sporadic support of the Constitution and America's founding principles, Mitt Romney is too flawed to earn the Free Press' endorsement.

Romney may be less eager to tax, spend, attack personal freedoms and disregard the constitutional limits on government than his Democratic opponent, President Barack Obama, but only slightly.

To the extent that Romney offers an alternative to Obama, the difference is in degree, not in kind.

As a result, the Free Press editorial page endorses Libertarian Party presidential candidate Gary Johnson for President of the United States.

Jill Stein: The college newspaper Georgetown Voice:

While these are certainly important issues, what gets lost in the pandemonium is a critical look at Obama’s record on inequality, civil liberties, and justice here and abroad. Based on these issues and more, progressives should vote for Green Party Presidential candidate Jill Stein and her running mate Cheri Honkala.

Obama’s policies have only served to foster, rather than diminish, inequality. In the wake of the 2008 housing crisis, Obama oversaw the passage of the Troubled Asset Relief Program, a bill which, combined with the associated Federal Reserve actions, underwrote corporate profits at the expense of the millions of Americans whose home equity had collapsed due to risky investment behavior. The Wall Street bailout was intended to prevent a cataclysmic failure of massive banking institutions, but it did not include any debt-relief provisions to help the Americans who, together, lost $5-7 trillion in savings. Corporate profits have bounced back to record highs, while home equity, which holds the bulk of people’s wealth, has basically stagnated at 2008 levels.

Meanwhile, Obama extended the Bush tax cuts for the upper 2 percent. The result: greater economic inequality than under Bush, with 93 cents of every dollar of income growth going to the top 1 percent.

None of the above:

State Journal Register:

We won’t endorse this year in the presidential race, given that we haven’t had any time with President Barack Obama, Mitt Romney or their running mates and can’t share anything that you haven’t seen or heard.

Newspapers are divided whether to endorse in the presidential race. Many of those moving forward with endorsements are papers in swing states, where the candidates have made multiple appearances and visited the editorial boards.

How are those endorsements running? At last look they pretty much mirrored the race, with about half for Obama and half for Romney.

We haven’t had candidate visits, since the state’s electoral votes are clearly decided. So our time was best spent with the local candidates.

Tuscaloosa News:

We also question whether endorsements really function as a persuasive tool. The editorial page’s purpose is to speak thoughtfully on issues of the day in hopes of provoking discussion that will result in a positive outcome for the community. Readers seem to infer from endorsements more about the organizations making the endorsements than the candidates being endorsed. That is the opposite of the way it should be.

The public is better served if it trusts The News to report fairly and freely on the candidates seeking office. It is better served if the opinion section identifies the important issues that affect the community and makes cogent arguments supporting the opinions expressed about those issues.

But we will leave it to the voters to determine which individuals can act on those issues in the manner that best serves the community.
