Trial of the Week or Jury Selection of the Week

Jury selection is beginning in the murder trial of former Yreka, California, resident Jodi Arias, whose case I have mentioned on this blog previously. She is charged in the horrific murder of her ex-boyfriend, Travis Alexander of Mesa, Arizona, in 2008.

Arias clearly was unstable, and I do believe based upon the overwhelming evidence against her (including photographs from Travis' camera which actually document what had happened right up to and after his murder), she should be convicted of second-degree murder, but it is very possible she will get the death penalty if convicted. I say second-degree based on her obvious mental instability; however, she did premeditate the killing upon learning Travis was seeing other women.

Yreka, for readers not familiar with northern California, is only about a 45-minute drive south from this cold shithole called Medford, Oregon. My dad grew up in the area, so many members on his side of the family are buried in the Yreka-Hornbrook region or whatever you want to call it. The best thing about this part of California is the great view of Mount Shasta. It is truly one of the crown jewels of the western United States. I want some of my ashes to be scattered there if I ever die.

Getting back to the Arias trial, the jury will be picked, but we won't have a trial until after the holidays. The lawyers need the time off for their Hawaiian or European vacations before tackling a case that may cost the defendant her life.

Details:

On Monday morning, 75 potential jurors filled out questionnaires asking them about their backgrounds, their beliefs about the justice system, and whether they have formed any opinions about the case against Arias. The panel was introduced to the major players of the case Monday, including the defendant. Arias wore a green shirt and black slacks and stood up to greet the potential jurors.

Seventy-five more potential jurors will fill out questionnaires Monday afternoon.

A total of 375 potential jurors will be summoned to the court over the next three days. The attorneys will review the questionnaires, before they return to court on Monday December 17 to individually question the potential jurors.
