This isn't the first time this has happened, but the family was sure quick to exploit it.
Personally, I think it is a bunch of bullshit. People in the past stayed together for decades on end, long after the relationship was good for them. Because people live a lot longer now than many decades ago, it simply isn't common for couples to stay together 2/3rds of a century or more, and definitely not natural to live with somebody that long and not develop a set of independent interests. Since this couple was presumably Catholic, they probably didn't believe in divorce anyway.
Of course it could really have been a love match, but somehow I think it was more of a co-dependent relationship.
Thanks to decades of romantic nonsense in the movies and the like, most people think this is the most wonderful story in the world, but I find it simply sad.
Which it is.
