How in the hell this moron apologist for teacher-student sexual relationships ever got this hideous opinion piece published is a mystery to me.
Next thing you know we will get an opinion piece from the head of NAMBLA.
Statutory rape doesn't discriminate on the basis of occupation. It's a crime, and that is that, and it should remain illegal.
In 23 states, it is a crime for teachers (and other school staff) to have sex with students. There is a reason for that--to discourage such relationships and to prevent sexual harassment lawsuits.
Keeping professional boundaries is absolutely critical in education. I don't approve of teachers even going to students' homes on a "home check," let alone approve of this sexual exploitation of the powerless by the (more) powerful.
