Obituary: Jay Traynor, 70, a founder of the sixties group Jay and the Americans, has died of liver cancer. He suffered from the disease for two years.
While he was the original "Jay" in the group, he was not in the band when they had their greatest hits such as "This Magic Moment," "Only in America," and so forth. That was a different guy, one David Blatt, adopting the name Jay Black, who sang lead on the big hits. He's still kicking around at age 75 although he had to file for bankruptcy some years ago. Traynor left the group early on, after they scored a Billboard hit with "She Cried" in 1962.
