Obituary: The namesake of a famous racehorse has died:
In 1965, Dr. Fager saved the life of John Nerud, a Hall of Fame horse trainer who had developed a blood clot on his brain after being tossed from a stable pony. In gratitude, Mr. Nerud decided to name a horse after the doctor._____
“I didn’t know a horse trainer from a lion tamer at that point,” Dr. Fager once said.
His equine namesake, Dr. Fager, went on to be a record-setter and was named horse of the year in 1968, when it became the only thoroughbred to win four championships in a single year. It was inducted into the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame in 1971.
