The "free range kid" movement is a reaction to all of the helicopter parents who are exaggerating about how unsafe the world is for their kids.
Overprotective parents really do their kids a disservice. That isn't to say some precautions aren't necessary. However, kids need to have a measure of independence in order to function as healthy adults.
Of course the most recent controversy involves CPS people getting involved in matters they shouldn't be involved.
