News, Etc.

According to her son, well-known attorney and author Jeffrey Toobin, Marlene Sanders has died. He posted the news over at Facebook:

Marlene Sanders, my mother, died today. A pioneering television journalist – the first network newswoman to report from Vietnam, among many other firsts – she informed and inspired a generation. Above all, though, she was a great Mom.

Since this was just posted, there is no formal obituary yet.

Update: Here is the AP obit:

Sanders was the first woman to anchor a prime-time network newscast, for ABC, in 1964, when she filled-in for Ron Cochran. Additionally, she was the first network TV female journalist to report from the Vietnam War and the first female vice president of a news division, ABC, in 1976.

In 1971, Sanders took over for ABC's Sam Donaldson for three months, anchoring the "ABC Weekend News" on Saturdays. She produced many documentaries for ABC and then moved to CBS in 1978, working as a documentary correspondent and a producer until 1987. She won three Emmy Awards during her distinguished career.

Sanders died of cancer.
