Obituary: Omar Sharif

Popular Egyptian actor and world-class bridge expert Omar Sharif, 83, has died of a heart attack while in a Cairo hospital.

Recent stories had it that the famed actor had suffered from Alzheimer's disease.

One of the best-looking actors of the 1960s, he became best known for his starring roles in Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago.

Sharif always wanted to become an actor:

Born Michael Shalhoub in Alexandria, Egypt, Sharif was the son of Syrian-Lebanese parents.

After working three years at his father's lumber company, he fulfilled his longtime ambition to become a movie actor, going on to appear in nearly two dozen Egyptian films under the name Omar el Sharif.

His peak years as a leading actor were over early, but he was still in demand for roles. Sharif also wrote a column on bridge and authored books on the subject.
