One of the most celebrated figures in horse racing history who is not an equine has died. John Nerud died at the impressive age of 102.
He is remembered for a number of achievements. First of all, he was the trainer of one of the most famous horses in American racing history, Dr. Fager, a horse who has for many years held the record for the mile on dirt. At one time it was the record for any surface. Nerud is also remembered for being a co-founder of the Breeders' Cup Championships.
Nerud also trained famous racehorse Gallant Man and was also a owner and breeder. One of his horses, Cozzene, was a Breeders' Cup champion.
The article notes he also owned Fappiano, a horse who is seen in numerous pedigrees of modern racehorses.
The cause of death was heart failure.

I was an employee of Mr. Nerud when i was just 18 but admired him for the rest of my life , i still talked to him occasionally and received my last phone call from him just weeks before his death in July after i called and congratulated him on the Triple Crown victory of American Pharaoh which would not even exist if he hadn't created those famous bloodlines so long ago in Ocala on our farm, He was a genius and gifted man in all aspects , i will miss him and the fun chats we shared
