Obituary: Former horse trainer David Whiteley, 73, has died. He trained many top horses, including Coastal, the horse who in 1979 defeated Spectacular Bid's bid to be the third consecutive Triple Crown winner thanks to Bid's jockey screwing up the ride.
Whiteley was the son of Frank Whiteley, even better known, as he was the trainer of racing greats Damascus and Ruffian. Ruffian is still regarded as the greatest filly ever to race, and in my view, the only horse who could be compared favorably to Secretariat.
