Obituary: Monty Hall

Canadian-born game show host and creator, Monty Hall, best remembered for hosting Let's Make a Deal, a show he co-created, has died. He was a mere 96 years old. His daughter said he died of heart failure.

I was a big fan of the show in my childhood in the 1960s. I rarely missed an episode during summer vacation. Monty Hall played a part in my childhood. He had a great personality and was a great huckster, way better than Jack Bailey and not sordid like Hugh Hefner. Hall's show was endlessly parodied.

His wife of nearly 70 years, television producer Marilyn Plottel, died in June. This often happens with longtime married couples, meaning many of them die shorty after being widowed.

Mr. Hall recalled it somewhat differently in 2013: The game changer, he said, was a woman carrying a sign that said, “Roses are red, violets are blue, I came here to deal with you.”

Whatever it was that opened the floodgates, would-be deal makers were soon showing up wearing live-bird hats, Tom Sawyer costumes or boxes resembling refrigerators. Some simply waved signs pleading, “Pick Me.”

LMAD, 1970:

Hall had a degree in chemistry and zoology. The degree might have come in handy with him handling the audiences of his show.

Fun fact: Hall's oldest daughter, Joanna, is married to Susan Sarandon's ex, Chris.
