I read another book excerpt about her where she wasted a lot of her youth on casual relationships with men and then got strung along by a real jerk who led her on for something like eight years and kept cheating around on her. That couldn't have done her much good. David Brown was probably the best thing that ever happened to her, and she was married to him for 51 years until he died.
Warts and all, she was probably the only normal person who was considered in the vanguard of the "sexual revolution" and practically the only woman.
