Obituary: Vic Damone

Singer Vic Damone, very popular in the 1950s, has reportedly died.  He was 89 years old.

Damone had a highly publicized marriage to actress and singer Diahann Carroll.  The marriage lasted from 1987 to 1996.  His first marriage was to actress Pier Angeli, and, if you are any kind of movie buff, you would recall that Angeli had a big romance with doomed actor James Dean.  Dean apparently deeply loved Angeli, but reportedly her family was opposed to him.  They didn't think he was good enough.  Since there was no future in the relationship, Angeli instead went for popular singer Vic Damone, a good catch because of his fame, plus he had the right background, for want of a better word.  Supposedly when Angeli and Damone got married back around 1954, Dean was outside the church all heartbroken it happened.  Of course, the Angeli-Damone marriage went kaput, and Angeli killed herself back in 1971, reportedly claiming her heart always belong to James Dean.  Anyway, that was the story or rumor or legend or whatever you want to call it.

Damone fared better.  He started out young and could be said to have been a protégé of sorts of Perry Como's.  The forties and fifties marked the golden age of the crooners before Elvis Presley came along and threw the music business into a tizzy.  Frank Sinatra openly admired Damone.

More:

Damone was born Vito Farinola on June 12, 1928, in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn to Italian immigrant parents, Rocco and Mamie (Damone) Farinola.

Damone is survived by six grandchildren and two sisters, Elaine Seneca and Terry Sicuso. Two other sisters died before Damone: Sandy Boucher and Pia Romeo.
Damone is also survived by three sons-in-law, William Karant, Michael Woodard, and Joel Brown.

A son named after Perry Como, Perry Farinola Damone, died in 2014.
