So how did Bill Clinton manage to go on the "dark side" and have anything to do with his predecessor in the White House?
It had to do with the aftermath of the Indonesian tsunami and Hurricane Katrina; in other words, from shared humanitarian interests.
Such cross-party friendships are not unheard of in American politics. Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter were good friends. So were Harry Truman and Herbert Hoover.
