Part of Highway 101 near Brookings is destroyed because of a landslide.

Crews have begun clearing debris at the north end of the Hooskanaden Slide , which closed Highway 101 about 12 miles north of Brookings, Oregon on Monday, February 25th, according to the most recent update from the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Ground movement downhill has slowed to about six inches an hour, according to ODOT, which is "a significant improvement from a week earlier when the ground was slipping an average of two feet an hour."

The ground is still moving too fast for construction crews to start rebuilding. Once movement has slowed to two inches per hour, Tidewater Contractors will place a rock along the quarter-mile section of displaced roadway and open traffic to one lane. The work required for the rock placement may take one to two days, estimates ODOT.

Obituary:  Noted serial killer Juan Corona, 85, who shocked the world by murdering 25 farm workers in the early 1970s and then burying them on farms close to his home, has finally died.   He had been in prison for close to fifty years.

The good die young, indeed.

He died yesterday:

Mr. Corona’s victims were luckless drifters who moved from farm to farm, scratching out a bare existence in the valley’s orchards, groves and vineyards. No one seemed to miss these “fruit tramps,” as the locals called them, when they disappeared.

The killings came to light after a peach farmer spotted a fresh hole in one of his orchards near Yuba City on May 19, 1971. When he returned to investigate later that day, the hole had been filled in.

Suspicious, the farmer called the Sutter County sheriff’s office. Deputies dug up the body of a man. He had been stabbed in the chest and his head had been split open. A search of the orchards in the vicinity revealed other graves, some freshly dug, some made weeks before.

The digging went on for days, until 25 corpses had been unearthed. The victims ranged in age from about 40 to the mid-60s. All had been hacked and stabbed. One had been shot as well.
