There are many people out there, including the notorious "Christian" psychologist Dr. James Dobson, who thinking beating the crap out of your kids is not only acceptable, but it teaches character.
Parents wouldn't think of hitting another adult, but since children are considered property, parents feel they can do whatever they want.
