Obituary:  Racing Hall of Fame jockey Randy Romero, known for riding top horses like Personal Ensign, has died after years and years of suffering health problems.  He was 61.

Romero had been battling a series of health issues going back to 1983, when a near-fatal sauna explosion at Oaklawn Park burned 60% of his body. While receiving blood transfusions during skin graph operations, he received blood tainted with hepatitis C. The blood transfusions saved his life, Romero said in an earlier interview, but the hepatitis has severely damaged his liver.

He would continue to face a barrage of other health issues, including the discover a stomach tumor in 2015 while he was being screened as a candidate for a liver and/or kidney transplant. More stomach cancer was found last year, according Gerald Romero.

It is amazing he was able to accomplish what he did considering the horrific health problems.
