Obituary: Actor Bill Macy, only 97, known for his role as Walter Findlay in the 1970s sitcom Maude, has died. His character was married to the title character played by Bea Arthur.
He had quite a bit of stage experience prior to the series. He was with the show until the very end of its run in 1978.
And yes, he hit Bea Arthur in the one episode which dealt with alcoholism. He felt horrible when he did it, the same as James Cagney felt when he smashed a grapefruit in Mae Clarke's face in the film Public Enemy or as Ann Blyth did when she landed a haymaker on Joan Crawford in Mildred Pierce.
“Maude” — a spinoff of the 1971-79 comedy “All in the Family,” starring Carroll O’Connor and Jean Stapleton — was known for prodding the public about turbulent social issues, including women’s rights, race relations and abortion. One particular episode delved into Walter’s drinking problem and included a scene in which he slapped Maude — an act that affected Macy himself emotionally._____
“When I hit her, on camera …,” said Macy, choking up and fighting back tears, during a 2015 interview with Shout! Factory, “I … It’s how I felt, even just the memory of it.”
Are the Russians planning to push Tulsi Gabbard into a third-party run, as Hillary Clinton suggests? Or, more accurately, hinted at since she didn't mention Gabbard by name, but Gabbard took the bait anyway.
I wouldn't put it past them. It sounds like Bernie Sanders isn't going to do this time thanks to his health situation.
