Separations from school districts are always shrouded in secrecy. Both stories could be true. Nonrenewal of a contract for a teacher who is probationary is the same as being fired; a principal can get rid of a teacher for any reason or no reason at all. Typically a new teacher knows long before the end of the year whether his or her contract will be renewed. Teachers are always given options to resign prior to separation so as to not damage chances of being hired elsewhere. Besides, in 1970 it was perfectly legal to fire women for pregnancy.
