Obituary: Longtime PBS NewsHour anchor Jim Lehrer has died. He was 85 years old and died in his sleep.
As a Dallas print journalist, he covered the JFK assassination. Years later, he joined Robert MacNeil, who I thought had died but is still alive at 89 (he had a birthday on January 19), to anchor the PBS News Hour. Lehrer also helped moderate 12 presidential debates.
He was a good journalist of the old school.
Following the duo’s “gavel to gavel” coverage of the Watergate hearings — which served as an indispensable and informative insight into the Nixon scandal in the days preceding 24/7 cable news networks — the seeds of NewsHour were born in 1975, first as The Robert MacNeil Report, before becoming The MacNeil/Lehrer Report. The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour followed in 1983 and, following MacNeil’s retirement, The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, with Lehrer at the helm until 2011.
For his work in journalism and television, Lehrer was the recipient of awards ranging from a National Humanities Medal to a fellowship of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences to an induction into the Television Hall of Fame.
