 Obituary:  Doo Wop singer, songwriter, and music producer, Len Barry, known as the lead singer of the doo wop group, The Dovells of "Bristol Stomp" fame, died on November 5 at a Philadelphia hospital.  He had suffered from myelodysplasia, which is a disease of the bone marrow.  He was 78 years old.

Leonard Warren Borisoff was born on June 12, 1942, in Philadelphia. His mother, Bernice (Goldsmith) Borisoff, sold men’s clothing. His father, Joe, managed a bar.

 

A passionate and talented basketball player, Len was on the Overbrook High School team that won the Philadelphia city title in 1959. His teammates included two future N.B.A. players, Walt Hazzard and Wally (later known as Wali) Jones.

 

While in high school he also sang with a doo-wop group, the Brooktones, some of whose members were later in the Dovells. He would continue to perform with the Dovells and on his own through the early 1970s — but only occasionally afterward.

Another obit:  Actress Dena Dietrich, 91, known for her Chiffon margarine ads, has died.

 

Dietrich died Saturday of natural causes at a health care facility in Los Angeles, her friend of more than 40 years, actress, composer and author Freddie Weber, told The Hollywood Reporter.

 

Dietrich also starred opposite Peter Falk and Lee Grant in the original 1971-73 Broadway production of The Prisoner of Second Avenue and played the sister of Bea Arthur's Dorothy on a 1991 episode of NBC's The Golden Girls.

 

She had recurring roles as a nurse working alongside a Manhattan doctor portrayed by Danny Thomas on the 1976-77 NBC comedy The Practice and as an unconventional judge on the 2001-02 ABC legal drama Philly, co-written by Steven Bochco.

 

From 1971 until about 1981, the lanky Dietrich appeared as Mother Nature in commercials for Chiffon margarine, a substitute for butter that came in a soft tub and was made out of hydrogenated cottonseed oil.

Another obituary:  Former NYC mayor David Dinkins, 93, has died of natural causes.  His wife died a month ago.  This often happens with long-married couples where they die within a short time of each other.
