While some 60 percent of those polled say marriage is still very important or somewhat important for children, an increasing number of people regard it as not important at all or somewhat not important.
What gets me are the economic concerns of the pro-marriage crowd. Women are always denigrated in the labor market, no matter what work they do, and the denigration is designed to shore up the marriage system by coercing women into it by making sure it is difficult if not impossible for women to live on their own, let alone support children. Marriage benefits men, not women. Men get sexual access, kids, and free domestic labor if women are economically crippled.. There was and still remains the notion of the "family wage" which was invented to kick women out of the labor force while overpaying men for jobs regardless of education, skill, and experience. (This is the reason why the pay gap exists and why so-called "women's jobs" are denigrated despite them typically being better jobs and more skilled.) The pro-marriage crowd always yaps about how "important" it is for women to be married in order to combat poverty, but what they are really asking women to do is exchange sex for financial support from men; i.e., prostitute themselves. It is far better to attack the problem at its roots, and that is the denigration of women's occupations in the labor force.
