From Rat Eating to Ratfucking

Today I came across this article noting that convicted Watergate figure, later talk show host G. Gordon Liddy, 90, had died.  His son announced the death and said his dad didn't die from complications from COVID-19 although the cause of death wasn't made public.

Liddy was the classic case of "the good die young."  He was a right-wing fanatic who would do anything for Nixon.  Years ago, when he wrote his autobiography,  he bragged about eating a rat, and the link notes that episode.  I knew he was a ratfucker, not a rat-eater.  He never was sorry he broke the law for his idol Nixon, and he would continue parlaying his infamy into other lines of work.

Liddy somehow passed a background check and was once an FBI agent before selling his soul, if he ever had one, to Nixon.

Snip:

He and colleague E. Howard Hunt, a former CIA agent, came up with schemes so outlandish and illegal that their superiors often squelched them.

Among them were a plot to kill investigative columnist Jack Anderson, an ardent Nixon critic; having anti-war protesters at the Republican National Committee in San Diego in 1972 kidnapped and taken across the border into Mexico; and luring Democratic Party officials to a party with prostitutes.

But not all their plans were rejected.

In 1971 a few months before the Watergate burglary, Liddy was part of the break-in at the offices of a psychiatrist who was seeing Daniel Ellsberg, a former U.S. military analyst who leaked the top-secret Pentagon Papers about the U.S. war in Vietnam.
