Conflating organized police departments, let alone the concept of the police itself, with so-called slave patrols is flat-out lying about U.S. history, and it needs to stop.

A simple Google search would debunk what this nitwit college professor claims.  The concept of the police began in ancient times, and organized, publicly funded police departments in the United States began in the NORTH in the 1840s, at around the same time when public school districts were spreading throughout the United States.  It had nothing to do with slave patrols.  This woman has been brainwashed with critical race theory horseshit and has no concept of history.

Good riddance that she resigned.

As for the student, no, police aren't heroes but are all too human including some engaging in unnecessary force.
