Obituary: Arazi

Many younger horse racing fans may not remember Arazi, but for a brief time in the early 1990s he was considered a superstar racehorse as a two-year-old.  People had hope for him for his three-year-old season, but like many precocious racehorses, he couldn't repeat his talent as a three-year-old.  I believe he entered the 1992 Kentucky Derby, and he finished way up the track.

He eventually retired to stud, eventually living in Australia.  Arazi, the Blushing Groom son named after an aviation checkpoint in Arizona (his owner, Allen Paulson, named his horses in this manner, including Cigar), died yesterday at the age of 32.

Arazi was sent to France in the beginning of his career, where he rattled off a string of victories.  His reputation continued when he came back to the United States and competed in the 1991 Breeders' Cup Juvenile.  He was impressive, let me tell you:

As noted in this article/press release, Arazi traveled all over the world after retiring to stud.  His stud career wasn't notable, however, with the exception of Congaree.

His outstanding two-year-old season will always be remembered.
