The Bootleg Fire, which began near Bly, Oregon, about 90 miles southeast of where my nephew recently moved, has now destroyed nearly 400,000 acres (more than half the size of Yosemite National Park) and is just 30 percent contained. However, fire experts are learning a lot from this fire about fire management, perhaps the biggest culprit of why these fires spread like they do.

Thanks to genetic genealogy, another old cold case murder has been solved, though the man suspected of committing the crime has since died.
Police say they got a DNA match to the murder suspect through a genealogy website and identified him as Darren R. Marchand.
He had been arrested prior to Isaacson’s death in connection with the 1986 murder of a woman but the case lacked evidence and was dismissed. Marchand committed suicide in 1995 prior to his 30th birthday.
