 Of course Biden, or rather the Secretary of Education, ALWAYS had the power to cancel student loan debt.  It isn't a congressional matter because the education department is part of the executive branch, not the legislative.  Biden is merely dragging his feet for political reasons.  He KNOWS he can cancel as much of the debt as he desires; he has already done it.  He is just seeing what the potential fallout is if he cancels it widespread.

Biden has done piecemeal student loan cancellations since he became president; there is NO reason at all he can't cancel 50k.  The whole thing smacks of political calculation.

I would be very surprised indeed if Nicholas Kristof becomes the Democratic nominee in next year's Oregon gubernatorial race.
