Obituary: Young adult author Gary Paulsen, 82, known for his books of surviving in the wilderness, most notably Hatchet, has died. He was a very busy writer, having written some 200 books and 200 magazine articles during his career.
Paulsen died of cardiac arrest at his home in New Mexico. Despite his fame, he and his family lived quite modestly.
Snip:
Paulsen’s stories of survival under harsh conditions drew in part on his own life, including his experiences hunting and trapping for sustenance as a child. His 1986 book “Hatchet” told the story of a 13-year-old boy stranded in the wilderness with only a hatchet. It won the Newbery Honor. Paulsen followed “Hatchet” with four sequels, including “The River” and Brian’s Hunt.” His other books include “Dogsong” and “The Winter Room,” both Newbery Honor winners, as well as “Harris and Me.” His 1994 non-fiction book “Winterdance” told the story of the Iditarod sled dog race, in which Paulsen competed. “Winterdance” was the inspiration for the 2002 movie “Snow Dogs.” Paulsen’s final book, “Northwind,” will be published in 2022.
