Breeders' Cup Odds and Ends

In the BC sprint yesterday, outstanding racehorse Domestic Spending, a gelding, was injured in the race with what is termed a "serious injury" likely to his pelvic region.  I hope he will recover and presumably he will be retired.

The same I hope for Epicenter, winner of the Travers, who was eased up and vanned in the Classic.  He is scheduled for surgery today, and the injury is not considered life-threatening.

Snip:

"I don't think anybody's thinking that it's a life-threatening injury," said Winchell racing manager David Fiske.

Epicenter was transported to Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington after the race.

The Runhappy Travers Stakes (G1) winner, who finished second in two of the three Triple Crown races this year, was pulled up in the backstretch by jockey Joel Rosario. He would come to a stop approaching the far turn, where he would be examined and eventually loaded onto a van.

Bless those jockeys for knowing when a horse is under physical stress.

Classic winner Flightline is now retired and will stand at Lane's End Farm in Lexington.

The nice thing about the races being held at Lexington's Keeneland is the horses only have to be vanned a few miles to their homes, assuming they retire and many of them do after these races.
