It is sad news indeed that the only child of music legend Elvis Presley, Lisa Marie Presley, has passed away at the age of 54. She had suffered from cardiac arrest earlier today, and despite the best efforts of medical personnel, she passed away.
She was born February 1, 1968, exactly nine months to the day Elvis and his then-wife, Priscilla Beaulieu Presley, were married in Las Vegas. She strongly resembled both parents, who in turn looked quite a bit alike. She perhaps favored Elvis a bit more, especially with the eyes. He was known to spoil Lisa rotten.
She was only nine years old when Elvis died of cardiac arrhythmia at the age of 42 on August 16, 1977. Yes, he did have heart issues and especially intestinal issues that were indeed hereditary, hence all of the prescription drugs he used.
When Lisa hit 30 years of age, she gained control of her dad's estate (although the will said she was to get it at 25, she waited another five years before gaining control) and eventually sold Elvis Presley Enterprises years ago. She continued to own Graceland. She also embarked on a singing career, with modest success.
Lisa went through four marriages and had four children. She got a lot of publicity when she inexplicably married Michael Jackson in 1994. They divorced two years later. She had a brief marriage to actor Nicholas Cage and went through a long, contentious divorce with her last husband and father of her twin daughters, musician Michael Lockwood. However, her first husband, Danny Keough, seemed to be the best of all the men she was linked with, and he had once again lived with her, performed CPR on her, and was with her at the end.
Lisa was seen in public just a couple of days ago, first to mark her father's 88th birthday and then at the Golden Globe Awards. She didn't look well at the latter event. She had had a great deal of strain after her son, Benjamin Keough, had committed suicide two years ago at the age of 27. Losing a child, especially in that fashion, is more than any parent can bear.
Lisa is survived by her mother Priscilla, half-brother Navarone, her three daughters, and her ex-husband Danny.
On Thursday, Presley was rushed to the hospital for a possible cardiac arrest. A spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department confirmed to PEOPLE that paramedics responded to the 5900 block of Normandy drive in Calabasas to treat a woman in her 50s who was not breathing. When they arrived, the paramedics began CPR and, upon noting the patient had "signs of life," transferred the woman to a local hospital for "immediate medical care."
A spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Fire Department confirmed to PEOPLE that the unit was dispatched to the address for a cardiac arrest call.
