Raquel Welch, 82, star of such movies as Fantasic Voyage and One Million Years, B.C., the latter of which had a famous still of hers that adorned the walls of millions of males around the world, died after a short illness. She was married four times, with two children from her first marriage to her high school sweetheart, James Welch, Tahnee and Damon, who survive her. Although she was regarded more as a sex symbol (of the 1960s especially) rather than an actress, she refused to do any kind of nudity out of respect for her children. She spent much of the early years as a single mother. Her second husband, Patrick Curtis, was a big help in boosting her career.
Raquel also had some success in business interests involving beauty. She also had some success on the stage so she wasn't an airhead or close to it. She was a popular guest on talk shows and remained in the public eye until her final years. Looking at her photos from the sixties, she had to have crash dieted quite a bit in order to get photographs of her in skimpy outfits. She looked almost gaunt in those photos. She was not a large woman, having as she did a small frame. In my view, she looked way better after she reached menopause age and filled out. She probably thought the same as well. She looked much healthier.
Welch made over 70 films.
Snip:
The Chicago-born actress went on to star as Constance de Bonacieux in the 1973 movie “The Three Musketeers.” Welch won a best actress Golden Globe award for her performance, and reprised her role as de Bonacieux in the 1974 sequel “The Four Musketeers: Milady’s Revenge.”
Other notable roles for Welch include the titular role in 1970’s “Myra Breckinridge,” in which she played a trans actress.
In the 90s, Welch appeared in various sitcoms, including “Seinfeld,” where she played herself as a nod to the legendary diva she had become. Welch also appeared in “Spin City,” “Evening Shade” and “Sabrina, the Teenage Witch.”
Welch’s iconic roles continued into the turn of the century. The Hollywood legend appeared in 2001’s “Legally Blonde” alongside Reese Witherspoon and portrayed Mrs. Windham Vandermark, ex-wife of the late Hayworth Windham, whose murder Witherspoon’s Elle Woods helps solve.
