Kentucky Derby 2023 Results

Mage has won the 149th Kentucky Derby.  He had only three starts coming into the race.   Jockey Javier Castellano won his first Derby.  Jockey Castellano and trainer Gustavo Delgado  are from Venezuela.  Shades of Canonero II in 1971.  He was 15-1.

Two Phil's was second, and co-favorite Angel of Empire finished third.  The time was 2:01.57, far off Secretariat's 1973 record.

Co-favorite Tapit Trice finished seventh.


Commonwealth Syndicate owns the horse.  There are 382 shareholders in Mage.  Mage is sired by Good Magic, sired by Curlin, (dam Glinda the Good), while his dam Puca is sired by Big Brown out of Boat's Ghost.
