I dismissed a recent "study" pushed by the anti-abortion crowd about how full of "grief" and "regret" men have when their wives or girlfriends or one-night stands have abortions without consulting them or disregarding their feelings. Men don't own women, and they are not owed anything from them, including sex and reproduction. Since women are disproportionately affected by pregnancy, men's feelings are secondary if not irrelevant.
However, not all men see it this way. I regard men who have an entitlement attitude toward women as abusers or potential abusers. I have no use for abusers.
I also noted that one of the things that is sure to happen is these states with extreme antiabortion laws will one day force women, especially married women, to get a man's permission before having an abortion. Some men, however, are taking things into their own hands.
Case in point is a 22-year-old man named Harold Thompson who lives in Texas. He was recently arrested and charged in the murder of his 26-year-old girlfriend or former girlfriend Gabriella Gongalez. He murdered her Wednesday, the day after she came back to Texas after getting an abortion in Colorado thanks to the former state basically banning the procedure except in the most extreme circumstances.
Gonzalez's family spoke out regarding the murder:
“I looked at her beaten, he no longer let her talk to anyone, he took everything from her,” Gonzalez’ mother told NBC 5 in Spanish. “He took his phone, he managed everything for her. She was scared."
Court records report Thompson had also abused Gonzalez while she was pregnant.
According to the arrest report, Gonzalez had just returned this week from a trip to Colorado to get an abortion. Police say Thompson was believed to be the father of the child.
“He was so angry that she wanted to get away from him,” Rubio said. “She would always tell me that she wanted to leave, but that she couldn’t.“
