Fifty Years Ago Today

It was fifty years ago, June 9, 1973, which marked the greatest single performance in the history of sports, never again to be duplicated (courtesy of NYRA YouTube channel):

Secretariat's name is literally in the pedigrees of thousands of thoroughbreds today.  His influence is felt largely through the daughters Secrettame (Storm Cat), Terlingua (Gone West), and Weekend Surprise (A.P. Indy).  Through A.P. Indy, his grandson Tapit has had an enormous influence on the Belmont Stakes in particular.

This article explains it.

Secretariat was hardly a dud as a sire.

He wasn't just the greatest athlete the state of Virginia ever produced, but he remains the greatest athlete, period.

His performance in that Belmont will never be duplicated.
