Like many other parts of the country, the special education teacher pipeline has dried up.
The so-called MAPS teacher jobs, not to mention the assistant jobs, are among the hardest jobs in the entire economy to do. I am not joking about that. The students range from moderate to severe disabilities, with the classes heavily on the autism spectrum. Really, really, really tough work, and a teacher or an assistant has to be young and strong physically to be able to do it.
No wonder those jobs are extremely difficult to fill and have high turnover.
