A Few Reads for the Near End of the Year

Obituary:  J.T. Lundy (the initials are for John Thomas), who mismanaged the fabled Calumet Farm back in the 1980s and 1990s and nearly destroyed it, died December 27 from complications from a fall in November.

He had no business running the farm in the first place, as he had had no background in the racing industry, and it showed.  However, I will never, ever, ever believe that the legendary Alydar was killed for the insurance money.  That is complete and total bullshit and would have required a large conspiracy.  The rumors were peddled by unscrupulous authors who knew they were peddling unfounded rumors, but did it anyway.

The farm was eventually sold to a well-known breeder and the trophies, which were in danger of being dispersed (and those trophies are worth millions and millions of dollars, ended up being owned by the state of Kentucky and are (and were then) on display at the Kentucky Horse Park.  I saw those trophies back in 1989, and they were really something to see. They were worth millions of dollars then--I imagine the trophies' value have skyrocketed since.
