Obituary:   Noted R&B singer Frankie Beverly, 77, has died.  He was known to dress all in white in his concerts, and his fans dressed likewise.

Snip:

While Beverly started the band in Philadelphia, it was in the Bay Area that Maze’s career took off. The band, then called Raw Soul, moved to the West Coast in the early 1970s, eventually landing in Oakland, where a permissive landlord allowed them to stall their rent payments while they worked to get the band off the ground. According to a 1980 Oakland Tribune profile, the band scraped by playing at local clubs, finally scoring its big break when a relative of Marvin Gaye caught the band at a San Francisco club. Maze went on to tour with Gaye for a year and a half. A major label deal, and then a debut album, soon followed.
