Obituary:   Singer and dancer Mitzi Gaynor, 93, known for her roles in 1950s musicals such as Les Girls and South Pacific, died earlier today.  Gaynor died of natural causes.

Snip:

Born Francesca Mitzi Marlene de Czanyi von Gerber on Sept. 4, 1931, in Chicago, the future star grew up as the only child of Hungarian musical director Henry von Gerber and former vaudeville dancer Pauline Fisher Gerber. Naturally, Gaynor developed an interest in the arts at a very young age.

She began classical ballet training at an early age and when her dance school relocated to Hollywood, Calif., in 1943, 11-year-old Gaynor and her mother followed. Then known as Frances Gerber, Gaynor joined a troupe of USO dancers at age 13. She would soon make her Broadway debut in the Edwin Lester production of Gypsy Lady, which is when she opted to drop her first name and go by Mitzi.
