TMZ has reported, thanks to a Facebook post by author Laurie Jacobson, who is married to former child star Jon Provost (Lassie), Jay North, who played the title role in the vintage television series Dennis the Menace, died earlier today at the age of 73. He had been battling colorectal cancer for a long time and was surrounded by his family when he died.
After acting, North became a Florida correctional officer. It seems he was a really good guy who was loved by everybody.
To be honest, Jay North drove me up the goddamned wall in that part as Dennis. Maybe that was great acting, and it probably was. He sure irritated the shit out of me. If there was ever a case for corporal punishment, Dennis the Menace was it. Apparently some members of his family felt the same way, and he was outright abused by them. That was a terrible thing for Jay to bear.
North, a Hollywood native, was born Aug. 3, 1951, and was a fan of television from a young age. He started his career acting in commercials and appearing in small roles on variety shows like “The Eddie Fisher Show” and “The Milton Berle Show.” By the time he was six years old, he had landed the starring role in “Dennis the Menace.”
