Country music singer Eddy Arnold, 89, has died after a lengthy illness, it was reported a short time ago.

This special section of the Tennessean in Nashville has all kinds of information about the late singer.

Early in his career, Arnold was managed by Col. Tom Parker, who is most famous for being Elvis Presley's manager later on. In fact, it was Presley's enormous popularity which put a big damper on Arnold's career and the career of many others in country music.

The NYT obituary of Arnold notes he was different from other country artists in that he didn't sing through his nose but rather through his diaphragm. Which makes me ask what makes the writer think singing through the nose is exclusively a country music trait. After all, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen both "sing" (I use that in quotes) through their nostrils.

Arnold's wife, Sally, died just a couple of months ago. He had two children, Richard Edward Jr. and Jo Ann Pollard, two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren
