One of the biggest upsets was the 2004 Belmont Stakes, where previously undefeated Smarty Jones lost his first race to longshot Birdstone, owned by Mary Lou Whitney, who was actually sad for Smarty Jones and practically apologized for the win:
The winning jockey, Edgar Prado, practically apologized too, saying he had to do his job.
Smarty Jones never raced again. He was retired that August with a record of 8 wins and 1 second. He currently stands at stud at Three Chimneys Farm in Midway, Kentucky, and lives in the stall once occupied by Seattle Slew.
