Kentucky Derby Day 2026

Earlier:  Here is the current odds.  There were many scratches this year with the result of no clear favorite.  Renegade and Commandment are the favorites going into this year's race at 5-1, the 65th I have seen since I was six years old in 1961 and watched Carry Back.

Kentucky Derby 2012

Santa Anita Derby winner I'll Have Another has won the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby.

If you can't wait, the official website has the video already.

YouTube video:

The winner was ridden by Mario Gutierrez in the jockey's first Derby. He had the perfect trip, catching pace-setting Bodemeister before hitting the wire. Dullahan was third. Favorite Union Rags had problems early on and finished sixth.

The time was 2:01.83, way off Secretariat's track record. "They" don't even talk about that record anymore; it has stood for almost 40 years.

Champion racehorse Lava Man has actually been the winner's lead pony.

Yesterday was the day of the "distaff" Kentucky Oaks. Believe You Can won the 138th running:

The 135th Kentucky Derby [Updated]

And the winner is...

Longshot Mine That Bird in a spectacular upset. Pioneerof the Nile was second, and Musket Man finished third.

He was 50-1. Not only that, but the horse was a true Cinderella story, for he had been purchased for $9,500. His pedigree, however, isn't obscure, for he was sired by 2004 Belmont Stakes winner Birdstone, who in turn was sired by 1996 Kentucky Derby winner Grindstone. Another grandsire was 1990 Kentucky Derby winner Unbridled.

It's a double for jockey Calvin Borel. He won yesterday's Kentucky Oaks aboard Rachel Alexandra as well as today's race:

The race:

Proud Spell

won the Kentucky Oaks today, which is a similar race to the Kentucky Derby but geared for fillies.

Speaking of the Kentucky Derby, which is this afternoon and will be televised by NBC, there will be 20 horses entered.
