Obituary: Marty Ingels
Actor and comedian Marty Ingels, 79, has died. He appeared in many television shows over the years before becoming a talent agent, and was probably best known in recent years for his longtime marriage to actress Shirley Jones. They married in 1977.
Their marriage had some ups and downs, but in the end they stuck it out.
I remember him best when he starred in the classic one-season comedy I'm Dickens, He's Fenster, easily one of the ten best television sitcoms of all time. It ran from 1962-1963. He co-starred with John Astin, and despite Ingels' image as a somewhat oddball type, he had the less colorful part of the two.
The comedy was right out of Laurel and Hardy. It has been said that Stan Laurel was a huge fan of this show, which is about the highest praise you can give to a TV program.
For that brief series alone, Ingels will be long remembered. Here is a brief clip of that great show, which the first half is on DVD but the second half has yet to be released:
Ingels died from complications of a stroke.
