Former Missouri Senator Thomas Eagleton, 77, has died. He had been ill for quite some time with various health problems.
Eagleton, as political buffs recall, was 1972 Democratic presidential nominee George McGovern's first choice as his running mate, but revelations Eagleton had had some psychiatric treatment, including shock treatment, forced him to withdraw.
Sargent Shriver took his place.
