Notes for Thursday

I am involved in a major move after spending 16 years with a relative.  I am moving into an apartment complex not far from the other place.  Fortunately, it allows pets.  The move is why my posting here has been sporadic.

Obituary:  Famous Puerto Rican boxer Wilfredo Gomez, 69, has died.  Back in the early 1980s, I used to watch a lot of boxing matches with my dad before I moved down to Reno, and Gomez's matches were among those we watched.  Gomez was close to my age.

He had many health problems over the past 15 years, and the article notes he had suffered from brain damage from his boxing career.

Snip:

Gomez (44-3-1, 42 KOs), a 1972 Olympian for Puerto Rico, began his professional career in 1974. He won his first world title — the WBC super bantamweight crown — in 1977. Gomez held the championship for almost six years, making 17 successful title defenses and winning all of them by knockout.

After falling short to Salvador Sanchez in 1981 for the WBC featherweight title, Gomez became a two-division champion in 1984 and went on to win a belt in a third weight class — super featherweight — in 1985.

I remember that fight.  Sadly, Sanchez died in an auto accident the following year:
